What is a share?
When you buy shares in a company listed on the stock market it means that you now own part of it. You may not have to sit behind any tills or handle any widgets, but you can still benefit from the company’s hard work and success.
If the company does well, the value of your shares will increase. This means that if you choose to sell them, you will make a profit. On the other hand, if the company suffers then so will the value of your shares and you might lose money.
As a shareholder you might also receive a dividend, which is a regular payment from the company you are invested in. It also gives you the right to attend annual company meetings and vote on issues such as the Chief Executive’s pay.
Shares are also known as equities.
